Our Approach to Walk & Talk Therapy

Our Approach to Walk & Talk Therapy

Sometimes Moving Helps Us Process

Therapy doesn't have to happen in a chair across from a therapist.

For some people, movement and time outdoors can create an environment that makes it easier to think, process, and talk openly. Walk & Talk Therapy combines traditional talk therapy with gentle movement and time in nature to create a different therapeutic experience.

Research on exercise and time in nature has found benefits for areas such as mood, stress, attention, and emotional well-being. Movement can also provide an opportunity to slow down, regulate your body, and create space for reflection.

Sometimes, moving your body can help create movement in your thoughts, too.

Why Movement Can Be Helpful in Therapy

When we're stressed or overwhelmed, our bodies are involved just as much as our minds.

Walking provides gentle, rhythmic movement that can help some people feel more regulated and engaged during difficult conversations. Being outside can also provide a change in environment that helps interrupt the feeling of being stuck in the same mental space.

Walk & Talk Therapy may support the therapeutic process by providing opportunities to:

  • Slow down and become more present

  • Reduce physical tension and stress

  • Think through difficult situations while moving

  • Process emotions in a different environment

  • Improve attention and engagement

  • Practice grounding and mindfulness

  • Connect thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations

  • Reflect without feeling pressured to immediately find an answer

Walking isn't a replacement for therapy.

It is another way of creating an environment where therapeutic work can happen.

A Different Way to Have a Conversation

For some people, sitting directly across from a therapist can feel intimidating.

You may find yourself thinking about maintaining eye contact, how you're sitting, what your therapist is thinking, or how you're coming across.

Walking side-by-side can take some of that pressure away.

Instead of sitting face-to-face, you and your therapist are moving in the same direction.

Some clients find that this makes conversations feel more natural and allows them to open up more easily.

You may find that:

  • Eye contact feels less intense

  • Silence feels more comfortable

  • Conversations feel less formal

  • You feel less like you're being "interviewed"

  • You can move while you think

  • Difficult topics feel easier to approach

  • Talking feels more like a natural conversation

For some clients, simply changing the physical environment can change how therapy feels.

Nature Can Become Part of the Therapeutic Environment

There is also something different about stepping outside.

Natural environments can provide sensory experiences that aren't available in an office, like the sound of birds, the feeling of a breeze, changing scenery, and the rhythm of walking.

For clients who find nature calming or grounding, these experiences can become part of the therapeutic process.

Rather than focusing exclusively on what is happening inside your head, you can practice noticing what is happening around you and within your body.

This can be particularly helpful when working on:

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

  • Emotional regulation

  • Overthinking

  • Grounding

  • Mindfulness

  • Self-awareness

  • Life transitions

  • Grief

  • Personal growth

Walk & Talk Therapy Is Still Therapy

Walk & Talk Therapy isn't simply going for a walk with your therapist.

Your therapist will continue to use intentional therapeutic interventions based on your individual needs and treatment goals.

Your session may include:

  • Processing difficult experiences

  • Exploring thoughts and emotions

  • Cognitive and behavioral strategies

  • Emotional regulation skills

  • Grounding techniques

  • Mindfulness

  • Problem-solving

  • Relationship and boundary work

  • Goal-setting

  • Reflection and insight-building

The walking environment simply provides another setting in which this work can take place.

You Don't Have to Be a "Walker"

You don't need to be athletic or particularly active to participate.

Walk & Talk Therapy is not about getting a workout.

The pace is comfortable and can be adjusted based on your needs. The focus remains on your therapy, not how far you walk or how quickly you get there.

If walking isn't appropriate for you on a particular day, we can discuss whether another therapy setting would be more appropriate.

Who Might Benefit From Walk & Talk Therapy?

Walk & Talk Therapy may be a good fit for clients who:

  • Feel more comfortable talking while moving

  • Find face-to-face conversations uncomfortable

  • Have difficulty sitting still for extended periods

  • Feel more relaxed outdoors

  • Enjoy being in nature

  • Process thoughts more easily while walking

  • Want to incorporate mindfulness and grounding into therapy

  • Feel like traditional talk therapy can sometimes feel too formal

It may also be helpful for people who feel "stuck" when trying to process difficult thoughts and emotions.

A change in environment can sometimes provide a fresh perspective.

An Alternative to the Traditional Therapy Office

There is no single way therapy has to look.

Some clients prefer the quiet and privacy of an office.

Others find that walking side-by-side allows them to relax, think, and open up in ways that feel more natural.

You may even find that different settings work for different sessions.

The important thing is finding an environment that helps you feel comfortable enough to do meaningful therapeutic work.

Moving Toward Something Different

Therapy is about more than talking about your problems.

It's about processing what you've experienced, understanding yourself more deeply, developing new skills, and creating meaningful change.

For some people, movement and nature can help make that process feel more natural and accessible.

You don't have to sit still to process, grow, and move forward.
