IN-PERSON

Our Approach to In-Office Therapy

Therapy Should Feel Like a Place You Want to Come Back To

Walking into a therapist's office and opening up about your life can feel intimidating. You may wonder what you're supposed to talk about, whether you'll be judged, or if you'll know what to say.

At Upstate Christian Counseling, we want therapy to feel like a space where you can be comfortable, honest, and supported.

Our goal is not just for you to come to therapy. We want you to feel like it is a place worth coming back to.

You Decide What Feels Important

We usually begin sessions by asking what feels important for you to talk about.

Maybe something happened that week. Maybe you're struggling with a relationship, feeling overwhelmed, or need a space to process what has been on your mind.

We make room for that.

At the same time, your therapist is always paying attention to the bigger picture. We keep your goals in mind, notice recurring themes and patterns, and look for connections between what is happening in your life and what you are working toward in therapy.

Sometimes we follow where the conversation naturally goes. Other times, we may have an activity, skill, or topic prepared to help continue moving toward your goals.

You bring your life into the room. We bring intention to the process.

Therapy Is More Than Just Talking

Depending on your needs, therapy may include:

  • Conversations and processing

  • Coping skills

  • Worksheets and activities

  • Books and therapeutic resources

  • Videos and educational tools

  • Grounding and mindfulness exercises

  • Communication and boundary practice

  • Creative activities

  • Practical strategies to use outside of therapy

Our goal is to make therapy useful beyond the hour you spend in our office.

Therapy for Kids & Teens

Kids and teens do not always want to sit in a chair and talk for an entire session.

That's okay.

Therapy may involve games, crafts, art, books, conversation cards, hands-on activities, and sometimes sitting on the floor together.

We want young clients to feel comfortable enough to be themselves while also learning practical skills to help them navigate life.

Our hope is that therapy becomes a place they feel excited to come back to, not just another appointment they have to attend.

Faith Can Be Part of the Process

For clients who want Christian counseling, faith can be thoughtfully incorporated into therapy.

This may include:

  • Biblical principles

  • Scripture

  • Prayer

  • Faith-based resources

Our Goal

We cannot remove every difficult situation from your life.

But we can help you feel more prepared to face them.

Our goal is to help you better understand yourself, recognize patterns, build practical skills, and develop confidence in your ability to handle life's challenges.

We don't just want you to feel better in therapy. We want you to feel more equipped to face life outside of it.
